Go Therefore and Make Disciples

Matthew 28:16-20

The Great Commission

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Jesus gives us the greatest commandment. Love God. Love People.
But he also gives us the great commission. It’s our assignment.

1. Go Therefore
Someone told me a couple of weeks ago they wanted to support our church because we were a mission church worried about the community. And I thought to myself isn’t the church supposed to be missional.

Don’t we have an assignment?

Didn’t Jesus give us a commission?

When it becomes us four and no more. There is a problem.

When it doesn’t burden you while driving to church on a Sunday morning that not many people are doing the same. There is a problem.

When you have lost that fire to reach your coworkers, your friends, your family, There is a problem.

You have lost sight of the assignment.

As you follow His commandments, you will want to follow his commission. They are all tied up together. When you love God and people you will want to go therefore.  Its why when you got saved, you didn’t go straight to heaven. He said Go Therefore.

Psalms 2:8 Ask of me and I will give you the nations as your inheritance.

You want to know what to pray for. Pray this constantly, and specifically, and with power.

You don’t even have to go to the nations anymore, the nations have come to us in east Houma. Vietnam. Mexico. Nicaragua. El Salvador. Philippines (even more or coming). Honduras. Netherlands. Japan. Columbia.  Preach the Gospel. Work a VBS. Invite them to church. Pray for the nations as your inheritance. Have someone be in the talent show as an outreach.

And then most people will stop. We went.  But Jesus doesn’t.

2. Make Disciples

Disciple
1. follower of person or idea: somebody who strongly believes in the teachings of a leader, a philosophy, or a religion, and tries to act according to them
2. or disciple or follower of Jesus Christ: one of the 12 original followers of Jesus Christ, according to the Bible.

Many of us make converts, but few of us will make disciples “someone who follows the teaching and practices of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Making Disciple is a Lot like Raising Children
1. Until they learn to feed themselves…you have to feed them.
2. Word, worship, feed them, zeal, show them passion for the Lord.
3. Teach them how to walk
4. When they get into trouble, correct them then help them out.
5. You train children. They don’t know how to live. Train them.

And When You Get to Heaven

You get there and God asks how life… was and you agree that it is hard and there were many struggles. But then you turn around and say but here is Fredicka. And Fredicka turns around and points to Pablo and Minh. And here you have spiritual children and grandchildren and great children. And we have disciples that are making disciples. Cycles are being broken and legacies are being made.

Most things are caught rather than taught. It is not in the sermon, or great message, but in how you live out the message. Because we are living out the “great commission.”

Most likely I will not go to many nations, but the ones that I am training up…they will.
Jesus was the same way. He lived in a thirty mile radius and poured his life into the twelve.
Then his disciples took the message and made it a commission and brought Christ to the nations.
And here we are 2000 plus years later!!

1 Thessalonians 3:6-10
6 But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of your faith and love and reported that you always remember us kindly and long to see us, as we long to see you— 7 for this reason, brothers,[b] in all our distress and affliction we have been comforted about you through your faith. 8 For now we live, if you are standing fast in the Lord. 9 For what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God, 10 as we pray most earnestly night and day that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith?

1 Thessalonians 3:17 “And now we really live because you are doing well”

What a way to live.

When someone that you have bought to Christ begins to live out the ways of Christ.

Wow what a feeling.

And it is to happen over and over again.
It’s our assignment.
It’s our commission.

We are not to grow weary.
We are to keep the fight.
And wait for our inheritance and "go therfore and make disciples."
