The Power of God

1 Corinthians 4:20 NLT

For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God's power

We don’t want to be Christians that just talk a lot about what we believe, instead we want to be those that walk in the power that is living on the inside of us.

For a moment let’s examine this power that is living on the inside of us.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God

In the beginning of what? In the beginning of time as we know it.  God was already existing. Think back billions and billions of years before this time, yes God was there too.  He always has been and He always will be.  In the book of Revelations 21 He is called the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the End.

In other words, He was in the beginning before the beginning had a beginning.

Our minds have a hard time grasping that because we live in the constraints of time. We all have start points and end points.  We can maybe remember childhood memories as early as 4 or 5 years old.  We also know that one day our time on earth will expire.

However, God was not created, He is the creator!  He has no beginning nor does He have an end.

He is a God of infinite worth, and He is glorified when we begin to brag to others of who He is.

1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

God’s Power Is Creative

We didn’t evolve from monkeys, nor are we the outcome of the big bang.  The bible clearly tells us that God created the heavens and the earth.

2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

This whole chapter tells of our powerful God and what He can do.  He is not a fairy tale, He is real.   He is so real and so powerful that He looked upon the earth which was void and without form, and said “Let there be light” and immediately the bible states “and there was light.”

In other words, light came into existence because He said so.  Darkness was also separated from the Light because He said so. He made something out of nothing using only words.

I am a designer/builder.  Whenever I design something and then choose to make that something, I always have some type of resource to use to build my something.  God on the other hand took nothing and made something.

He created the first day on planet earth and He declared it to be good.  If He declared it to be good then who is there to argue otherwise.  No one!  Who was there to deny the light from coming into existence, No one.

His power is so creative, though He spoke the world into existence over 6000 years ago, those words are still creating today. (example sky, water, life)

There are 5400 species of mammals, there are 8240 species of reptiles, 10,000 species of birds, 30,000 species of fish, there are 950,000 species of insects.

It is estimated that 10,000 new species of life are found every year.

God’s Creative power is still creating today!  Perhaps you have experienced a creative miracle.

God’s Power is Incomparable

In Exodus, we see man’s attempt to outdo God’s power.  Let’s look at it.

Exodus 7:10-12 (turn to)

10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron cast down his staff before Pharaoh and his servants, and it became a serpent. 11 Then Pharaoh summoned the wise men and the sorcerers, and they, the magicians of Egypt, also did the same by their secret arts. 12 For each man cast down his staff, and they became serpents. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs.

This was one of the first acts that God would use to grab the attention of pharaoh so that he would let His people go to worship Him.

Even though the magicians and sorcerers used demonic powers to turn their staffs into serpents, Aaron’s serpent swallowed up their serpents.

This signifies to us two things:

God’s creative power is original while the enemy can only mimic and distort God’s power.  In other words, it claims to be able to do the same thing that God can do, yet it cannot.

  • For example, the enemy would use his power to convince you that a substance or a relationship can fill the emptiness in your life. Meanwhile, you discover that your problems only become greater. What appeared to be the answer to your need only created a greater need.
  • The truth is that only God’s power can fill those empty places in your life if you let Him.

Secondly, God’s power is greater than the power of darkness.

When Light and darkness collide, Light wins every time.  Just as Aaron’s serpent (representing God’s power) overcame the other serpents (representing the power of darkness).

God would further demonstrate His power through ten plagues to convince pharaoh to let His people go.

While the magicians and sorcerers could replicate the first two plagues, the rest they could not.  Proving that the power of God is incomparable and the power of darkness is limited.

It is amazing to me that when God created the world the very first thing that He created was Light.  That light was so powerful, that darkness could not contain it.  Revealing to us there is nothing that can stand against the Power of God. His power is incomparable!

(object lesson of God’s power being incomparable)

God’s Power Is Revealed Through Jesus

Colossians 1:15-16 (Turn to)

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

In these few verses, we see that Jesus was with God in the beginning and that all things were created through Him and for Him.  We also learn that the fullness of God dwelled in Jesus.

In other words, the fullness of God’s creative, incomparable power was demonstrated through Jesus.  It was the fullness of God the Father living on the inside of God the Son. Whom by the way, came to this earth in the form of flesh and blood.

Imagine with me, the fullness of God’s power living in flesh and blood.

Jesus demonstrated this power in many ways.

He healed blind people, Lepers, Paralytics, Women with issues, cast out devils, raised the dead, controlled nature, fed the multitudes etc.….

Just as there was nothing or no one who could out power God in the old testament, there was nothing or no one that could stand in the way of Jesus’s power in the New Testament.

Demons would squeal and beg for mercy as soon as He showed up on the scene.

He was God in the Flesh.  The fullness of God dwelling in Flesh and Blood.

God’s Power Is Still At Work In The Earth Today.

As we learned last week, God is showing Himself to Muslims and they are being converted.

That’s the power of God!

But we don’t have to look to the other side of the world to see His hand at work.

His power is destroying the
