Purity Victory Found in Christ

Topic: Sin Scripture: Ephesians 4:17– :24, 1 John 2:14– :17

Ephesians 4:17-24

17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!—

21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self,[a] which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,23 and tobe renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

I JOHN 2:14-17 kjv

14  I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17 And the world passes away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abides forever.

 I. We need to understand that Jesus is the only one qualified to empower us to live as He commands us to live.

a.  Hebrews 4:14-15 kjv

14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

21 (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord swareand will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)

b.  Hebrews 7:21-27  kjv

22 By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.

23 And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death:

24 But this man, because He continues ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.

25 Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever lives to make intercession for them.

26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

27 Who need not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for His own sins, and then for the people's: for this He did once, when He offered up Himself.

II.We need to understand that all temptations falls under three areas.

I JOHN 2:16   kjv

16 For all that is in the world, the (lust of the flesh), and (the lust of the eyes), and the (pride of life), is not of the Father, but is of the world. (kosmos) its inhabitants and their systematic way of doing and thinking.

What was Jesus' earthly experience?

Hebrews 4:15  kjv

15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was "in all points" tempted like as we are, YET WITHOUT SIN!!!!!!

What POINTS?

lust of the flesh, ( cravings for sensual physical gratifications)

lust of the eyes,  ( craving for everything we see)

pride of life,   ( pride in our achievements and possessions)

Jesus' wilderness Temptation

Mt 4:1-11  kjv

1 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.

2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, He was afterward hungry.

3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, (command that these stones be made bread).

5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and settethhim on a pinnacle of the temple,

6 And saithunto him, If thou be the Son of God, (cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone).

8 Again, the devil takethhim up into an exceeding high mountain, and (shewethhim all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;)

9 And said unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

III. We need to understand that temptations comes from our own desires which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. When sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death according to

James 1:14-15.  kjv

IV. We must understand that victory comes when we submit to and abide in the fullness of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 12:1-2 amp.

1 I appeal to you therefore, brethren, andbeg of you in view of [all] the mercies of God, to make a decisive dedication of your bodies [presenting all your members and faculties] as a living sacrifice, holy (devoted, consecrated) and well pleasing to God, which is your reasonable (rational, intelligent) service andspiritual worship.

2 Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, eventhe thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].
