My Money Don’t Jiggle Jiggle It Rolls

I secretly have always wanted to be a rapper.  I have lyrics in my head at all times.  One of the trending songs of the summer amazingly is written by a middle aged guy just like me.  He wrote the song in early 2000’s and never thought much of it.  Put a beat behind it, and in the past year it has become viral on Tic Toc, the dancing app.

Shakira just danced to for one of the late night shows..

His kids who are now teenagers say “Dad it’s so CRINGE how famous you are”

I just thought what a Sermon Name…Today’s Sermon

My Money don’t Jiggle Jiggle It Folds (As You Say it Have Coins and Dollar Bills)

Now some people will say that churches talk too much about money but I join in with a Pastor’s  voice that I once heard saying “if you think we talk too much about money, you don’t come to church enough!!”

As we spend our summer in Proverbs getting Wisdom,

We have learned how to have a healthy “Fear of the Lord”

Walking in Mercy and Truth

As well as letting Go of the grip that we have on “Our Plans” and entrust them to God’s Hands

But there are so many verses and sayings on the topic of money, wealth, and giving in the Proverbs, and so after gathering every verse that details anything to do with money I noticed three specific categories to notice and will be the topic of our sermon today

“My money don’t Jiggle Jiggle It Rolls.”

We really would want to get that right?

We want Our money to last.

Not living from paycheck to paycheck.

That would be a good example in our finances to our kids and those coming behind us.

That our marriages would be better because our finances are better.

And I know there are so many types of situations in this room.

Teens, Single Moms, Widows, Divorce, Failing Finances, Government Assistance…

But how do we collectively get our money to not Jiggle Jiggle but Fold?

  1. Be Generous

This sounds so strange to start here (especially if you are working through some tremendous financial issues), but it is such a biblical God honoring concept, because it’s ALL HIS!!

So, Proverbs Says…

“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.”

Proverbs 3:27 (NIV)

“A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.”

Proverbs 11:25 (NIV)

“It is a sin to despise one’s neighbor, but blessed is the one who is kind to the needy.”

Proverbs 14:21 (NIV)

“The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor.”

Proverbs 22:9 (NIV)

Since the beginning in the book of Genesis, being generous and giving offerings is established.

Genesis 4 and Abel gives a more pleasing sacrificial offering to the Lord.

Abraham gives 1/10th of his spoils to Melchizedek and then it becomes law.

Jacob vows to make Yahweh His God and give a tithe.

Give at least 10% to the House of the Lord and the Work of the Lord.

So much of what you see here today is because people outside of here are generous.

What if this church would become generous?  What if you would become faithfully generous?

I am going to be generous because I want the Kingdom to Increase.

When I give generously, I am investing into the Kingdom.

  1. Work Hard and Pay Off Debt

“Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth.” Proverbs 10:4 (NIV)

“Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies have no sense.”  Proverbs 12:11 (NIV)

“Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.”  Proverbs 13:11 (NIV)

“All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty.”  Proverbs 14:23

“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest— and poverty will come on you like a thief and scarcity like an armed man.”

Proverbs 24:33-34 (NIV)

So, then the idea is to work.

And just in case we forgot what work is the actual definition…

Work – Activity involving mental of physical effort done in order to achieve a purpose or result.

And Proverbs in all of its wisdom says Hard Work brings a Profit!!  Get a Job!!

Have something that you do.

Parents teach your kids this young, don’t just hand out free money, because money is not free.

Add an allowance that comes with work that they do, or they won’t learn the necessity of a job.

Don’t bail out your adult kids financially, because it doesn’t teach them the value of hard work!!

And our nation is in a crisis because of it.

And one of the reasons for that is because debt is far too easy to accumulate.

The I don’t have it, but I want it now mentality.

Proverbs says the “borrower is slave to the lender!”

“One who has no sense shakes hands in pledge and puts up security for a neighbor.”

Proverbs 17:18 (NIV)

“The rich rule over the poor, And the borrower is slave to the lender.”  Proverbs 22:7 (NIV)

“Do not be one who shakes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts; if you lack the means to pay, your very bed will be snatched from under you.”  Proverbs 22:26-27 (NIV)

If you can’t afford it, don’t get it!!

And be careful with the big and small things that add to your debt.

A $5 Starbucks every day is $35 a week is a $147 a month $1,764 a YEAR!! On Starbucks!!

And seriously Starbuck no longer just cost $5 anyways!!

A $50 going out to eat meal for a family of 4, 4 times a week $840 a month $10,080 a Year!!

On Convince?

And you wonder why you are not making it!!  Stop Spending what you don’t have!!

Make a Budget and Stick to It!

I grew up giving generously and tithing.  I also grew up saving.  At least 50% of what we made was forced into savings by my parents.  I personally watched my parents pay off their house in 7 years and I remember we threw a party when it happened.  So, Ted and I were progressing in our relationship working towards marriage and so let’s talk about finances!!

I was working for Hope Extreme where for a while I didn’t even take a salary.  I had worked as a youth pastor for minimal wage before that and before those 5 years a band director, but I was a saver and budgeter.   Ted on the other hand had a fabulous job making lots of money and so I in my mind thinking he would bring lots to the table.

And clearly, he did, it was just all debt. (besides his 401k which the company saved for him)

And I am looking at him, and he is looking at my nest egg

I wanted to say “Your Money Jiggle Jiggles, mine FOLDS!”

It was a big deal and we together got serious about paying off his debt and budgeting.

We are engaged and watching Dave Ramsey and how to make our money work for us!!

It’s not a sexy story, it’s a real life story.

We found out what matters to the each of us

What we were gonna save for

What we were gonna budget for

How many times we were gonna allow ourselves to go out to eat in a month

We started killing debt

And we would take the debt we would pay off on one bill and apply it to another

So his truck became debt free…

And furniture became paid for…

And electronic drum set was actually his and not for Guitar Center…

And now our car is paid for as well…

And all we owe is a house note…

That is the only debt we have on our life right now…

We pay our bills every month.

We buy only what we can afford.

So, when my daughter comes in asking to be a cheerleader an it cost $1200 in middle school…

So, when it is tempting to put a pool in our yard because someone in our neighborhood did…

When you want a new something because someone else has it…

You are tempted to spiral back into consumer debt…

I don’t want my money to Jiggle Jiggle, I want it to fold!!

Debt should be approached with extreme caution.

The economic system provides for this ease.

Student loans, mortgages and credit cards abound.

And beyond the fact that debt puts us in bondage, consumer debt makes is extremely difficult to build wealth. Seek to pay off your credit card debt if you are in it and then once you get all your consumer debts paid off, it is time to focus on paying off the mortgage early.

  1. Investing

“A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children, but a sinner’s wealth is stored up for the righteous.”  Proverbs 13:22 (NIV)

“Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds; for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations.”

Proverbs 27:23-24 (NIV)

This is one I didn’t really look at until last year, now we have a 401K and put into it every month, but our money wasn’t really working for us though we aren’t really in debt and at the beginning of the year when we are going through our budget, we wanted to invest into something that would be lasting for our children’s children.

Now that is forward thinking, and the first two steps must be done!!

And I don’t know if something has shifted in me being that I turn 45 this year.

But I am thinking future a little more than I use to.

Spiritually I am doing this, but also financially.

What do I want my 70’s and 80’s and 90’s to look like?

And I was sitting in a Bible Study and know some friends in ministry that are now in their 60’s that lives have been turned upside down because they failed to invest when they were younger.  And I just thought to myself I don’t want to be like that.

And we did.

I wanted to have my money making money.

As an inheritance for my kids.

And to be more generous to the Kingdom.

Because a good person leaves a inheritance for their children’s children!!

Wow.

Be Generous.

Get out of Debt and Work Hard.

Invest into Your Future.

Learn this morning from the wisdom found in Proverbs.
